Gakuen Alice, Vol. 01 - Tachibana Higuchi Here is another manga that I haven't decided yet if I will continue following. The premise is pretty simple, and pretty familiar. Mikan is trying to get into a special school for Alices, because her best friend Hotaru is going there now. As she discovers, Alices have a magical ability that can be powerful and even destructive. Her Alice is a mystery to her until the end of the volume, but most readers will figure it out very early on. So yes, it is rather like X-Men in some ways, except that the main characters are all very young, elementary age. Mikan herself is usually sweet and cheerful, and I liked her. But I didn't really like any of the other characters. And although I liked some of the more original aspects (one of the other students has an ability to make enchanted toys, and starts with a territorial teddy bear) it's still very familiar over all.
